Open Question: What are the pros/cons of a 64-bit operating system?

So I'm in the market for a new laptop and I'm looking at a 64-bit vs. 32-bit OS. I've heard a 64-bit OS will run much faster, but there will be compatibility issues with some software applications (and you need to have 4GB RAM to effectively utilize the 64-bit).
